This paper argues that Interaction Ritual (IR) theory, developed by sociologist Randall Collins (2004), has the potential to complement existing studies by emphasising the social construction of memorable tourism experiences and their transformative effects. This is demonstrated here by using IR theory to analyse an example of transformative event tourism, the Mondiali Antirazzisti (Antiracist World Cup).
